The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) is part of the government’s objective to increase energy efficiency across homes in the UK and hopefully achieve net-zero carbon targets by 2050.
Aimed at landlords and property owners, MEES is set to improve energy efficiency in their properties, improve conditions in privately rented homes and, in turn, reduce fuel poverty.
What does this mean?
This means that all new domestic tenancies must be a minimum band C EPC rating by 31st December 2025 and all tenancies must be a minimum band C EPC rating by 31st December 2025. This applies to all residential and non-domestic properties.
If landlords continue to let out properties that are not an EPC band C or above after this date, they could face fines of up to £30,000.
